With Barcelona in the market for a new pivot midfielder following Sergio Busquets’ confirmed departure, several top players have been linked with a move to Catalonia.

Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad and Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich remain among the priority targets for the Blaugrana, but signing either of them is not straightforward.

As such, alternatives are being looked at, with some reports in England suggesting that Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes is a target for Barcelona.

Indeed, it was claimed that the La Liga champions were not fazed by the Brazilian international’s €100 million valuation and had plans to sign him up this summer.

However, according to Joaquim Piera of SPORT, Barcelona have not considered the possibility of signing Guimaraes from Newcastle United at any point.

At a time when they are scrambling to get players off the books so that they can sign and register Lionel Messi, there is simply no way that the Catalan giants can splash around €100 million on a single player.

So, the name of Guimaraes was never on the table of the technical staff at Can Barça and there were no contacts with the Brazilian’s entourage at any stage.

Instead, the report claims that the midfield enforcer is in talks to renew his contract with Newcastle United after having helped them finish in the top four in the Premier League.

Guimaraes signed for the Magpies from Olympique Lyon in January 2022, in a deal worth €42 million. His current contract with the English outfit runs until 2026. Given his status within the club, it will not be a surprise to see him prolong his stay at St. James’ Park.

As for Barcelona, Guimaraes was never an option and it remains to be seen who they sign to replace Busquets in the summer.
