The rumours of Lionel Messi’s potential return to Barcelona next year have been gathering pace with each passing day.

The 35-year-old superstar left Barça last summer after the club failed to extend his contract due to their financial situation. Messi joined Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent, penning a two-year contract, with an additional option of 12 months.

However, in the last few days, there has been a lot of chatter about the Argentina captain returning to his old stomping ground when his contract with Les Parisiens expires in 2023.

President Joan Laporta has admitted that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s chapter at Barcelona is not over, adding that a fitting farewell would be for Messi to spend the final years of his career at Camp Nou.

Manager Xavi Hernandez is also believed to be pushing the club to sign his former teammate and bring him back to Catalonia.

Barcelona are said to be working towards mending their relationship with Messi after his untimely departure last summer. And now, Diario AS journalist Manu Sainz has come up with a fresh update on the former Barça skipper’s future.

According to the journalist, the Blaugrana already have received information that Messi will look to leave PSG after the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year and are thus working on convincing him to return to Camp Nou.

The update from Manu Sainz does not clarify whether Messi intends to leave PSG immediately after the World Cup, i.e., during the January window or wait until the summer to depart as a free agent, although the latter is more likely to occur.

And should that happen, Barcelona will be waiting to bring back their beloved legend and give him the farewell that he deserved but never got – an opportunity to bid goodbye to the Blaugrana on his own terms.
