While there may be a lot more negatives to take away than positives this season, there has been one crystal-clear positive Barcelona have found this season in the form of the resurgence of Ousmane Dembele.

The once injury-prone French winger seems to have finally started to find his feet at the club despite rumours of him being sold surrounding the news early in the summer transfer market. Manchester United were apparently very close to his signing, and while his situation in the starting lineup may have changed, Barcelona will need to make a decision about him soon.

Dembele’s contract expires in June 2022, after which he will become a free agent, and can walk out the club for zilch. While a contract extension in his position would be, ideally, with little to no doubts, Dembele carries with him a huge question mark in the form of his injuries.

Since signing for the club in 2017, Dembele has played no more than a handful of 63 games in the league, out of a possible 132. For context, Antoine Griezmann, who signed for the club two years later has already registered 52 appearances.

Owing to this, there are several doubts raised over his extension, and if he should get one. At 23, the World Cup winner can certainly be at the club for nearly a decade, with not a dent on his gargantuan potential to become a world-beater. However, if he cannot sustain his fitness, and not be available for the club, any investment done in his name is bound to go to the bin.

There will definitely be several clubs who will be ready to line up for the Frenchman’s signature, be it on a short-term loan deal, or a permanent contract. The decision to sell him, though, will lie in the hands of one of Joan Laporta and Victor Font, who are bound to become the next Barcelona president soon.

Dembele has played in 12 games this season in the league, scoring two goals and assisting one. Additionally, he is also Barcelona’s joint-top scorer in the Champions League with three goals and was also on call to bail out the club in the Copa del Rey tie in Round of 32 against UE Cornella.
