After a very disappointing 2022/23 campaign, Barcelona forward Ferran Torres has bounced back in some style in the new season.
The 23-year-old attacker was heavily linked with a departure in the summer but ignored all the speculations and worked hard on improving himself both physically and mentally.
And the results have been showing since the pre-season as he was one of Barça’s most promising players on the US tour, and has scored two goals in three appearances from the bench in La Liga.
Making the most of his chances
It earned him a call-up to the Spain national team following injuries to Dani Olmo and Marco Asensio and Torres made the most of it as well.
Coming on as a substitute against Cyprus in the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier last night, the Barcelona forward scored a quickfire brace to help La Roja to a 6-0 victory.
Speaking to Teledeporte after the game, Torres claimed that he believed he was on the right track to gain more prominence with Barcelona and the national team moving forward.
“If there’s one thing I’m working on, it’s to make the most of the minutes I get to gain more confidence from the coach. I think I’m on the right track,” Torres said.
“In the end, I have to work at my club to get the reward of coming to the national team. In this case it has been because of an injury to a team-mate but whenever I come here I’m going to give my all,” he added.
Stressing that the most important thing for him on the night was the victory of the team, Torres said: “The most important thing is the victory, the two games won by the national team, and now it’s time to go back to my club and keep working.”
Torres talks Xavi, Yamal
Further speaking to the media (h/t GOL), Torres also commented on several club matters, including the imminent contract renewal of manager Xavi Hernandez.
“Xavi deserves a contract renewal because he is doing a great job,” he said. “Xavi made a big change in the team. We have a very competitive team.”
The 23-year-old also had words of praise for teammate Lamine Yamal, who is scaling greater heights with each passing day.
Talking about his own situation, Torres added: “I’m working really hard on the pitch, showing what I’m capable of… Showing that I can be important for Barça.”
