Barcelona favouring a move for World Cup-winning Chelsea star to reinforce midfield

Barcelona are in the hunt for a new defensive midfielder. The decline of Sergio Busquets has been quite telling this season, with the midfielder failing to establish himself as the leader of the team’s second line of press, struggling with a lack of consistency.
It was reflected in his performance against Inter Milan earlier this season. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, Barcelona have to enter the market for a replacement in the pivot position.
The club have been linked with moves for Ruben Neves and Martin Zubimendi in the recent past. However, according to a report from Albert Roge, Barcelona are favouring a move for N’Golo Kante.
The Chelsea midfielder has emerged as the favourite for Barcelona’s coaching staff, in their bid to find a long-term replacement for Busquets next season.
Kante has been a subject of interest for many clubs across Europe this season, especially with his current contract expiring at the end of the season. Although Chelsea are in talks with the player over a new deal, nothing has been reached just yet.
This has put Barcelona on red alert. The Catalans are considering a move for the Frenchman next summer, knowing he could be available on a free transfer.
The report claims that there is a larger consensus within the club on Kante than on someone like Neves, with whom the sporting staff had doubts about his suitability.
Kante offers loads of experience at the highest level of football and has a track record of winning not only the Premier League and the Champions League but also the FIFA World Cup. His experience and ability to perform at the highest level could make him an invaluable asset for Barcelona.
However, luring Kante away from Stamford Bridge might not be straightforward. As mentioned earlier, the player is currently in talks with the Premier League giants over a new contract, while Barcelona may also face competition from a host of other clubs across Europe.
Furthermore, if the Blaugrana wish to sign him in January, they would also need to pay a fee, while also deal with the matter that he is currently injured. So, there is a lot to be considered before Barcelona can make a decision on their pursuit of Kante.
