Barcelona, as is the trend pretty much every season at this point, were hit by a storm of injuries going into the UEFA Champions League group stages. Several starters were sidelined, with a couple already out when the season started.
Frenkie de Jong and Robert Lewandowski picked up ankle injuries, while Raphinha pulled up his hamstring vs Sevilla. Jules Kounde was also ruled out of action due to a knock to his muscle. Sergi Roberto, too picked up an injury in training.
As such, Barcelona were without half their outfield starting lineup when they took on Real Madrid last weekend for the first El Clasico of the season. Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Kounde made it back to the bench, but were in no condition to start the game.
Pedri training with the team
Luckily for Xavi, Pedri is training with the team ahead of Barcelona’s clash against Real Sociedad next weekend, as per a report by RAC1.
The midfielder was one of the first players to pick up an injury, ruled out of action following their game against Cadiz in round two of La Liga.
He was ruled out for nearly two months, and returned to team training in time as per his recovery. However, he was not given the green light for any matches.
Now, the player is back in team training and could be a part of the squad list for the game against Real Sociedad.
De Jong could take time
Meanwhile, Frenkie de Jong is still not back in training with the group. He trained alone today, and will likely not make it back in time to face Sociedad.
His absence has severely hampered Xavi plans this season. Barcelona’s midfield seems lost in possession often, and lose control, especially in the second half of games when oppositions rack up the pressure.
