According to The Athletic, the Barcelona dressing room is ‘crazy’ about the possible return of club legend Lionel Messi in the summer and the players have vowed to do everything they can to help bring the Argentine back to the club.

The 35-year-old is set to become a free agent this summer as his deal with PSG is set to expire at the end of the season. With talks over a renewal with the French champions going nowhere, Barcelona have emerged as an option for Messi in the summer.

Several players such as Sergi Roberto, Ronald Araujo and Marc-Andre ter Stegen have already expressed their feelings about the potential return of their former captain in the summer. Robert Lewandowski also admitted on Tuesday that he hopes to play with Messi next season.

Now, The Athletic has been able to learn the stance of the entire Barcelona dressing room on the possibility of Messi returning to the club.

“We’re crazy for Lionel Messi to return, we’re going to do everything we can to bring him back to Barcelona,” is the message coming out from the dressing room, as told to The Athletic by an unnamed first-team staff member.

The fans have already started showing a great deal of excitement about the move, chanting Messi’s name in each of the last two matches at Spotify Camp Nou. And it seems like the players are also getting excited about the possibility.

However, club officials are much more reserved on the matter as they admit that Messi’s return would only be possible if Barcelona are able to resolve their issues with La Liga over the Financial Fair Play.

“Messi is still a long way from being close, and saying anything else wouldn’t be true,” a senior club source told The Athletic.

Despite the reservations, Barcelona have a strong hope that they can compete for his signing this summer. One of the reasons for the same is the meeting that was held between Joan Laporta and Jorge Messi which took place in February.

While both parties insist that a return was not discussed at the time, it marked an important step in repairing the strained relations between the two parties.

Secondly, Messi’s situation at PSG plays into Barcelona’s hands. The 35-year-old has been targeted by the French club’s supporters of late, while there is said to be some discontentment among both parties, casting doubts over a renewal.

The only other offer Messi has currently is from Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal who have offered him a deal worth €400 million per year. But the global superstar wants to remain in Europe, which favours Barcelona.

“We need Messi. From a football point of view, his addition would be massive,” another club source told The Athletic, while adding that he remains the No. 1 footballer in the world, especially when it comes to scoring and creating goals.

However, any move will be subject to Javier Tebas and La Liga accepting their economic viability plan.

“It’s not just about Messi’s potential signing, all the operations we would like to consider in the summer will strongly rely on the position Tebas and La Liga take regarding this viability plan and our salary limit,” a Barça source told The Athletic.
