Barcelona do not have an agreement in place with Bundesliga defender – Romano
Barcelona boast of Europe’s finest domestic defensive record this season, having conceded just seven goals after 21 games in La Liga. The board invested in the backline in the summer, bringing in Jules Kounde and Andreas Christensen, and it is safe to say has reaped its reward.
Kounde and Christensen have established themselves as regular starters under Xavi Hernandez. Alongside Ronald Araujo and Alejandro Balde, they form one of Europe’s finest back-lines.
One facet missing in Barcelona’s squad, however, is a left-footed centre-back. The Blaugranas have been linked with several names in lieu of the same.
In fact, it was reported that talks with Evan Ndicka had led to the club reaching a verbal agreement with the Eintracht Frankfurt.
But, according to a recent update from Fabrizio Romano, there is currently no agreement ready between Barcelona and the French centre-back. Unlike previous reports stated, the deal is far from done.
However, the Italian journalist confirmed that the Catalans had their eye on the player and did not rule out a move in the future.
Ndicka could well become a priority for Barcelona in the months to come, especially considering that he will be available on a free transfer in June. The only downside, however, is that the player could opt against the move considering the uphill battle for minutes.
The 23-year-old has started 20 Bundesliga games for Eintracht Frankfurt this season and has overseen four clean sheets in the process. He averages 1.2 interceptions, a tackle and over five clearances per game in addition to four duels won.
The Frenchman is not the only option on the Catalans’ radar for the coming summer . Barcelona have Inigo Martinez as a viable alternative, although the Spaniard’s age acts as a decelerating factor.
Further, former Barcelona player Samuel Umtiti has emerged as a surprise candidate in recent days. The centre-back has been in good form for Lecce this term and is seemingly past his injury woes. Thus, his incorporation as a squad player is not ruled out.
