Barcelona face an uphill battle even before the Real Madrid clash on the weekend in an attempt to get multiple players back from injury.

Xavi is, once again, without his best players as Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Jules Kounde are out of action, and most of them have been for a while.

Consequently, Barcelona are evidently struggling during games, with the defence having to pull them out of burdensome situations where the forward line starts flailing and the midfield loses control.

That will not run for Barcelona against Real Madrid, though. Carlo Ancelotti’s side have proven over the seasons that their form coming into El Clasico matters little and they can be as lethal as the best team in the world in clutch games.

This is why it is not surprising to see reports saying that Barcelona will not release the squad list one day before the game as usual. As per a report by Helena Condis, the coaching staff wants to assess the injured players once again at the last-minute.

Raphinha closest to return

The report says that Raphinha will almost definitely be given the green light, and is the closest player to a return from the sidelined stars.

The Brazilian picked up an injury vs Sevilla, coming off otherwise impressive performances through the season. He was ruled out for an extended period, but is nearing a return ahead of schedule.

Meanwhile, de Jong and Lewandowski are also expected to be included in the squad list, but their place in the team is not as guaranteed as Raphinha.

Pedri ruled out

Pedri returned to team training a while ago, but has not made any progress on his injury. He is guaranteed to miss out on the squad list, and will miss his fourth El Clasico in a row.

Jules Kounde and Sergi Roberto are among the latest players to have picked up an injury in the team, and will also miss out on the team list.
