When Xavi named the squad for Barcelona’s pre-season tour of the USA earlier this month, the inclusion of Clement Lenglet on the list came as a major surprise.

After all, the defender is out-of-favour at the club and had been given permission to miss training to find a club for himself prior to the tour.

But the manager sprung a surprise by including him in the squad list for the trip, where he has been training with the entire group.

However, SPORT is reporting that even though Lenglet is in the USA with the team, the centre-back will not play in any of the pre-season friendlies.

The 28-year-old, who spent the last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, was not involved last night against Arsenal, with Xavi confirming that his exclusion was due to minor discomfort.

Gavi didn’t play due to some back pain, Lenglet also has discomfort,” Xavi had said after the game.

And, SPORT is reporting that even after the Frenchman recovers, he will not see any minutes in the remaining two friendlies against Barcelona and AC Milan.

What next for Lenglet?

Lenglet spent the last season on loan at Tottenham and had a fairly solid campaign, enough for the Lilywhites to consider signing him permanently.

The Premier League club have been locked in talks with Barcelona but the 28-year-old’s valuation has been a sticking point in negotiations.

Barça are holding out for a fee of €15 million for the Frenchman, whereas Spurs do not wish to offer more than €5 million as they will also have to bear his hefty wages.

As such, talks have gotten complicated and a breakthrough does not appear to be in sight.

Amidst this, French club Olympique Marseille have also shown an interest in Lenglet and have asked Barcelona about him as well as Eric Garcia.

So, it remains to be seen if Lenglet returns to Tottenham on a permanent transfer or secures a move back to his homeland with Marseille.
