In a massive boost for Barcelona, defender Ronald Araujo has returned to group training and is closer to receiving a medical discharge, reports Albert Roge.

The 23-year-old defender suffered an injury while on international duty in September which needed him to undergo surgery. Initially, it was expected that Araujo would be sidelined for close to three months.

However, in a bid to play for Uruguay at the FIFA World Cup 2023, the centre-half pushed hard to recover ahead of time. While he did travel to Qatar for the World Cup, Araujo did not get a chance to play as Uruguay crashed out of the tournament at the group stages.

Following the tournament, Araujo was given an extended vacation by manager Xavi Hernandez, from which he returned recently and began individual work in a bid to return to full fitness.

Things seem to have progressed well for Araujo as he has now rejoined training with the rest of the group and is inching closer towards receiving a green light from the club’s medical staff.

Barcelona will resume their La Liga campaign on December 31 against local rivals RCD Espanyol. And at this rate, Araujo could be declared fit in time to face the Catalan team next week.

As things stand, Araujo is the only Barcelona player yet to receive a medical discharge. Franck Kessie and Pablo Torre were cleared by the medical department recently while Sergi Roberto is also fully fit and available after recovering from a dislocated shoulder.

Araujo’s imminent return will come as a huge boost for Xavi as it not only bolsters his options in the centre-back department but also at right-back, giving the manager more depth in the backline.
