According to David Bernabeu Reverter on SPORT, Barcelona are likely to offer a two-year contract to Lionel Messi as they continue to plan for his return from PSG in the summer.

Messi left Barça in the summer of 2021 due to the Catalan club’s inability to renew his contract because of financial constraints. After two seasons filled with highs and lows in Paris, the 35-year-old could be on his way back home to Barcelona in the summer.

Contract talks with PSG have broken down while offers from Saudi Arabia and the MLS are unlikely to be considered as the Argentina captain wants to continue in Europe.

It puts Barcelona in a solid position to re-sign their former captain, although they must still resolve their Financial Fair Play issues to bring Messi back.

The aforementioned report states that like Barça want to bring Messi back, the player himself is keen on returning to his old stomping grounds. However, both parties are aware that efforts must be made in order to complete the operation.

Messi’s last contract before he left for Barcelona was said to be worth around €100 million per year, gross.

However, with the club no longer in a position to offer such an enormous salary, they could table a proposal worth a quarter of that sum, i.e., €25 million per year gross, which would come down to a net wage of just below €13 million-a-year, similar to what Robert Lewandowski earns.

Barça wish to hand Messi a two-year contract, which would keep him at the club until 2025. However, the report adds that there will be a provision for the player to leave in 2024 if he wishes to do so.

As iterated earlier, though, Fair Play issues still need to be navigated for the operation to go through. La Liga president Javier Tebas insisted as much in a press conference earlier today, as he said:

“Today I don’t see his signing as feasible. But there’s a lot of time left and Barça can still make moves to get him, I hope and wish they make it happen. I’m a fan of Messi, he is the best player in the world.

“Barcelona must take many financial measures and ease their salary scale to undertake his registration. They must do a lot of effort in bringing him back.”

Barça, for their part, have been working on the operation for some time now, as per the report. They have studied all possible details through which they can register the 35-year-old legend and have made pertinent consultations on the matter as well. And, they believe that they can turn the dream into reality.
