According to Luis F Rojo of MARCA, Barcelona do not have an agreement in place to sign Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan in the summer yet. And, the Catalans could face added competition to sign him as the midfielder is coveted by several Premier League clubs.

Gundogan is set to become a free agent at the end of the season as his Manchester City contract is on the verge of expiry. While the Cityzens were keen on renewing the 32-year-old, recent reports have suggested that they have given up hopes of tying him down to a new deal.

It means that an exit for Gundogan seems the likeliest possibility in the summer transfer window. Barcelona, for their part, are intent on signing the German international and have made him one of their key targets for the upcoming window.

Given that he can play as an interior and a pivot and the experience that he brings to the table, the La Liga leaders are intent on securing his services.

There have been claims in some Spanish media that an agreement between the two parties was close. It has even been suggested that Barça will offer Gundogan a two-year contract, with the midfielder open to reducing his wages in order to secure a move to Catalonia.

However, as per the aforementioned report, there is no agreement in place as of yet and Barcelona are yet to receive a ‘yes’ from Gundogan over a possible move.

Furthermore, the report also adds that some clubs in the Premier League are also interested in signing the veteran midfielder.

It has previously been suggested that Chelsea could be a possible suitor for Gundogan. If the Blues do decide to firm up their interest in the Manchester City veteran, things could get tricky for Barça as Chelsea would be in a position to offer a much more lucrative contract to the player.

So, unlike the case with Inigo Martinez, where an agreement is already understood to be done and dusted, the Gundogan operation is still very much open and it remains to be seen if Barcelona can capture his services.
