One of the most tragic tales in FC Barcelona’s recent history was the bitter departure of Lionel Messi, who was forced to pack his bags and leave his boyhood club due to financial constraints.
Since leaving for PSG in 2021, there has been incessant chatter on the grapevine regarding his return, and last summer, a reunion appeared to be in the offing.
However, Messi decided to take his talents to Inter Miami, where he was reunited with former Barcelona legends Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.
Now, the possibility of Messi returning to his home has once again risen, with Memorabilia1899 on X reporting that Barcelona could face current World Champions Argentina at the new Spotify Camp Nou as part of the club’s 125th centenary celebrations in 2024.
Messi could be back home
While the match-up between a national team and club may appear uncustomary, this would not be the first time Barcelona have locked horns with an international heavyweight.
In 1999, to celebrate Barça’s centenary, the Brazilian national team came to Camp Nou to take part in an exhibition match.
The board, led by Joan Laporta, would appreciate having the greatest player in FC Barcelona history be present at the celebrations and get a well-deserved homage when the club celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2024.
Considering Messi left Catalonia on poor terms and his strained relationship with Joan Laporta, a reunion of this stature could help alleviate the sour terms between them.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is still going strong for Argentina, with the World Cup Champion expected to play for his national team until 2024, with the Copa America also coming up next year.
Therefore it is highly plausible Messi is handed the opportunity to return to his roots and receive the sendoff he was unfortunate not to get.
