Barcelona consider loaning out misfiring 23-year-old forward with a buy option

It is high time the offices at Can Barça buckle their seatbelts on the departure front. Barcelona’s squad at the moment looks unsustainably large, and the need to move players out is real.

For starters, the club needs to find means to ship out players like Clement Lenglet and Sergino Dest who are not part of Xavi Hernandez’s plans. Then there are the fringe players of last season who failed to deliver and the manager no longer counts on them.

One of the most prominent names in the second category is Ferran Torres. The player was seen as the marquee signing who could pull the club out of muddy waters at the time of his signing, but his performances thus far have been far from that.

According to reports from SPORT, the Catalans are working on a loan deal for Ferran Torres which would also include an option to purchase the winger. A direct sale is out of the question because the club needs to recover at least €40 million from the operation. His market value, as it stands, is too low to recoup that amount.

Torres hopes to convince Xavi with his quality and ability in the days to come in the preseason. However, he already knows of the administration’s plans to send him on loan.

The former Manchester City star was unconvincing through the 2022-23 campaign, making just 14 starts and averaging 42 minutes per game in his 33 league appearances. He scored four goals and provided two assists for the team, but also missed a whopping seven big chances.

Barcelona have been actively working on his departure for a long time now, but the 23-year-old has not been receptive to the same. With the board under severe pressure to offload players, it remains to be seen how they convince Torres.

Given that his transfer is yet to be amortised fully, a sale for a fee lesser than €40 million would mean losses for the club. As such, sending him out on loan with an option to purchase next year would make sense as the club could save on his wages at least for this season.
