With Barcelona focusing all their efforts on the signing of Jules Kounde, they are risking letting some of their other targets slip out of their hands. One such target whose potential transfer to Camp Nou has been cast into doubts is Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

The 32-year-old veteran defender has been one of Xavi’s key targets for the summer and looked very likely to join the Blaugrana not so long ago. Indeed, personal terms have already been agreed and negotiations with Chelsea were also progressing positively.

However, things have changed in the past few days due to the Kounde transfer saga. Chelsea were also keen on the Frenchman but have been beaten to his signing by Barça.

It is believed to have created some frustration within the Chelsea camp, which could lead to them blocking Azpilicueta’s move to Camp Nou.

Thomas Tuchel has already admitted that he wants to keep hold of the Spanish international and with the Blues missing out on Kounde, they could very well be forced to retain Azpilicueta as added defensive cover.

However, Fabrizio Romano is now reporting that Barcelona have spoken to Azpilicueta and assured him that they intend to start negotiations with Chelsea over his transfer once Kounde’s signing is over the line.

The two clubs are yet to reach an agreement over Azpilicueta’s signing but Barça seem confident about getting the deal done. However, with Tuchel keen on retaining his services, things might not be as straightforward as they seem.

Azpilicueta is seen as a vital addition to the ranks by Xavi, who values his versatility, experience and leadership. His contract expires next year and he could be available for an affordable price for the Blaugrana.

But what remains to be seen is whether a deal goes through smoothly or if Chelsea cause some issues.
