Barcelona are out of the race to sign Haaland; Man City, Madrid favourites
According to a fresh update from German journalist Patrick Berger on the Die Dortmund-Woche Podcast, Barcelona are out of the race to sign Erling Haaland in the summer transfer window.
The 21-year-old is one of the most in-demand players in the transfer market, with the who’s who of European football vying for his services.
Barça have been ardently pursuing the Borussia Dortmund striker, with Joan Laporta and Xavi Hernandez identifying the Norwegian as the leader of their new-look attack from next season.
The manager even travelled to Germany earlier this month to speak with Haaland and try to convince him to move to Camp Nou. However, it seems like the Catalans are now set to miss out on the former Red Bull Salzburg hitman.
As per the update from Patrick Berger, Barcelona are pretty much out of contention to sign Haaland. The German reporter further adds that Manchester City and Real Madrid have emerged as the frontrunners to sign the Dortmund hitman.
Only a few days ago, it had been claimed that Manchester City already have a deal in place to sign the Norwegian international. And, while talks may not be that further along, it does seem like they are currently the best-placed team to sign him up.
Patrick Berger revealed that the Premier League champions have made the best contract proposal for Haaland up until this point. He claims that the Citizens’ offer is very close to meeting the forward’s €25 million per year net salary demands.
With the 21-year-old prolific goalscorer seemingly headed to the Etihad, Barcelona will now have to scour the market for alternatives.
Several names like Robert Lewandowski, Lautaro Martinez, Romelu Lukaku, among others, have been mentioned. It remains to be seen who the Blaugrana end up signing.
