Barcelona are confident about signing Chelsea legend this summer
Barcelona’s pursuit of Cesar Azpilicueta is well-documented by this point now. Heading into the summer transfer window, the Spaniard has an automatic one-year contract extension, that has been seemingly triggered.
While that makes his signing difficult, Barcelona are confident about pushing the transfer through, according to reports from The Athletic.
Even though new owners are going to arrive soon, top European clubs consider Chelsea to be in a vulerable spot and will look to exploit them by pulling through as many transfers as possible.
Andreas Christensen is already en route Barcelona and Antonio Rudiger is another player who is going to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, with Real Madrid ready to hand him the keys to their defence.
The report also states that Mason Mount and Reece James have admirers across the continent as well, and while there is no move going through for either of them, we cannot rule it out. Especially with Manchester City and Real Madrid keeping an eye on James.
Xavi wants to sign Azpilicueta due to his versatility and experience. The defender has been the Chelsea captain for a few years now, and has experience playing as a right-back, left-back, and even as a centre-back in a defensive trident.
With Sergi Roberto and Dani Alves’ contract set to expire in the summer, Sergino Dest is the only right-back they have in the senior team. The same goes for the left-back spot, where Jordi Alba has no viable deputy.
Azpilicueta can plug into both these roles, and more than fits the bill of a positional play system. He is a tremendous passer, thoroughly composed under pressure, and an excellent crosser.
With the season ending in another few weeks, Barcelona will get to know their progress on Azpilicueta’s transfer soon enough.
