In light of Barcelona’s ongoing economic trouble, the club have had to enter or exit several sponsorship deals in order to better utilise the finances.
In another such development, it appears Barcelona are going through a difficult period with the main kit sponsor, Nike.
Tensions with Nike
According to SPORT, the relationship between Barcelona and Nike are tense right now, primarily due to financial reasons.
Although both parties have a strong contractual relationship, Barcelona believe the current terms of the deal are well below the market price.
Barça’s current deal with Nike was signed in 2016 and it runs until 2028, handing the club a revenue of around €155 million per season.
Not to mention, Barcelona are also unhappy with the services provided by Nike, including the quality of products and services to players.
The Catalans, therefore, would like to renegotiate some of the terms with the American apparel giants.
Puma & New Balance on alert
The further points out that Puma and New Balance are keeping a close watch amid brewing tension between Barcelona and Nike.
New Balance, in particular, have freshly ramped up their football business, notably signing a new deal with Real Madrid starlet Endrick, who will join the club in 2024. Clubs like Porto and Lille have also entered partnerships with NB.
However, the outside brands still stand very little chance of sabotaging Barcelona’s relationship with Nike, which has been going on since 1998.
Even at this stage, Barcelona assume they do not have the option to terminate the contract and will, instead, look to renegotiate terms of the contract to get the better of the deal.
