19-year-old Senegalese defender set to make debut for Barça Atletic today

Mikayil Faye rose to fame during Barcelona’s preseason tour to the United States of America earlier this summer.

The new Barça Atletic signing was said to be making a strong impression in training, with Xavi Hernandez particularly impressed by his repertoire.

The 19-year-old made his debut for the senior team in Barcelona’s 1-0 win over AC Milan but immediately returned to training with Barça B after the preseason tour.

Despite his promising run, he has not yet featured for Rafa Marquez’s side.

According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Faye had some bureaucratic issues that had to be fixed in his country owing to which he did not participate.

He is available to play now and could make his debut for Barça Atletic later today against Real Union Irun.

A long-term prospect

Faye’s involvement with the senior team in preseason came as a result of Andreas Christensen’s and Inigo Martinez’s unavailability through injury.

Yet, that does not go to say that Barcelona do not see Faye’s talent with good eyes.

Xavi paired the young Senegalese defender with Ronald Araujo numerous times in training earlier this year and was satisfied with the output.

Needless to say, he sees Faye to be one for the long term.

Barça Atletic – the stepping stone

It is almost a tradition at La Masia for a player to make an impact with Barcelona’s B team first before taking the step up to the senior team.

Faye’s route will be no different. Rafa Marquez’s men lost their first game of the 2023-24 Primera Federacion to SD Logrones last weekend and will be looking to turn their fortunes around later today.

With first-choice goalkeeper Ander Astralaga and the teenage sensation Faye back in the squad, the subsidiary team are the favourites.
