Barcelona’s recent success is usually associated with Hansi Flick and the emergence of a young, exciting squad, but a detailed report from MARCA has highlighted another figure behind the club’s transformation: sporting director Deco.

Since taking charge of Barça’s sporting operations, the Portuguese has had to work within financial restrictions while still giving the first team enough quality and depth to compete for major trophies.

His approach has been relatively simple: spend carefully, avoid unnecessary additions and make sure every signing serves a purpose.

Indeed, it looks quite simple from the outside, but the work performed by the former midfielder needs special appreciation.

Deco has changed Barcelona’s transfer strategy

The results on the pitch have given that approach considerable weight because Barcelona have won two La Liga titles, two Spanish Super Cups and one Copa del Rey under Flick, while the squad has continued to evolve rather than being weakened by financial limitations.

The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi are examples of that strategy.

Neither player necessarily represented the obvious profile of a future Barcelona signing when their moves first emerged, yet both have added different qualities to Flick’s attack.

Deco has also shown that reputations alone will not dictate Barcelona’s decisions.

On that front, the departures of high-profile players such as Ousmane Dembele, Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres demonstrate that no member of the squad is necessarily untouchable when the sporting and financial logic points towards a change.

Barcelona transfer balance puts Deco ahead of European rivals

Perhaps the clearest evidence of Deco’s work comes from the transfer figures highlighted by MARCA.

Barcelona have spent €289.5 million on 20 signings during the period, while receiving €318 million from 31 player sales, leaving the club with a €28.5 million surplus.

The figure becomes even more striking when compared with other leading European clubs.

As such, Atletico Madrid have recorded a €175 million deficit over the same period, while Real Madrid’s deficit stands at €408.5 million.

Bayern Munich, the closest of the major clubs mentioned in terms of spending discipline, recorded a net loss of €122.8 million.

The Premier League numbers are on another level entirely, with Arsenal at a €569 million deficit, Manchester City at €618 million and Liverpool at €635 million.

Deco’s Barcelona project is thriving

The numbers alone do not explain Barcelona’s improvement, but they demonstrate the constraints within which Deco has operated.

The more important achievement is that Barça have not reduced spending for the sake of their accounts.

Rather, they have continued to build a squad capable of challenging for trophies while maintaining financial discipline, and actually delivering the silverware.
