Xavi has spoken in a press conference ahead of the season’s last game, against Villarreal. While the Catalan club has already guaranteed their 2nd place in La Liga, the game will be an important morale boost for Xavi and co.

On the season: “I think this season could have been worse. But we have evolved and competed. I told the players to believe in the competition, but we didn’t do enough. We were eliminated from the tournaments. It wasn’t a great season, but we have improved.

“We want to develop in all respects, mentally and physically. I think we’ve evolved a lot physically. We also need to create more competition in the team.

On Mbappe and Haaland: “The club couldn’t afford Mbappé or Haaland? It’s true. We cannot compete in that direction. We wanted to be in the race for Haaland, but we couldn’t. We need to look forward.”

On Lewandowski and signings: “He’s one of the options, one of the possibilities. He said that he wants to leave. There are negotiations, he has one year of his contract left, and it won’t be easy.”

“If we sign players, they need to improve on what we now have. We need starting players, that’s what we’re looking for. Players who can compete well.”

On Dembélé: “Yes, it is possible [that it will be Dembélé’s last game with Barcelona]. Or he can continue with the team. I am optimistic and I hope it will continue. He’s been fantastic in many matches and I like him.”

On Frenkie de Jong: “For me, he is a great player. I think he can be part of an important era of the club. We’ll see what the situation is, but I like Frenkie.”
