Amidst their financial crisis, Barcelona do not have any leverage on the transfer market front. Signing new players is almost out of the question, with Vitor Roque being the team’s only new arrival in January.

Yet, one cannot deny that Barcelona are far from their best on the field and are in dire need of new inspiration. With the signing of new players no longer an option, Xavi must look for the spark to ignite within his existing resources.

The five ‘new’ signings

As revealed by SPORT in their latest update, Xavi considers Alejandro Balde, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen, Oriol Romeu, and Lamine Yamal to be his five new signings heading into 2024.

The Barcelona manager is intent on getting the best out of the aforementioned quintet starting this month for the remainder of the season.

All five stars have been far from their best in recent times. Romeu has looked a shadow of his former self, directly falling prey to the opposition press numerous times in recent games.

Yamal, meanwhile, has been less used owing to his tender age and the fear of overuse.

Balde is yet another player who has consistently underperformed this season. Such has been the youngster’s drop in form that Joao Cancelo took over as the team’s primary left-back in recent months.

The fight in defence

The final two names on the list – Christensen and Kounde – have both played far below their potential this season, much like the rest of their teammates. Their situation, however, is far more delicate.

Barcelona contemplate the sale of one of the two defenders in the summer to be almost inevitable from a financial standpoint. Their form in the coming months, thus, could be the difference between staying or leaving the club of their dreams.

As it stands, Kounde has the edge over his Danish counterpart in terms of securing a longer future at the club. Christensen, thus, will be under the spotlight as he battles to prove his worth to the manager.
