Of the various positions Barcelona need to reinforce this summer, the defensive midfield position has emerged as the number one priority.

The likes of Joshua Kimmich and Guido Rodriguez have been linked with the Blaugranas in view of the same, for a big-name signing in the position this summer is seen as inevitable.

Despite the administration’s forced forays into the transfer market, young Marc Bernal from La Masia stands out as one of the academy’s brightest talents and provides an in-house solution as a long-term pivot.

Xavi following closely

At just 16 years of age, the academy prospect has trained with the Barcelona first team on several occasions and is even a regular for Rafa Marquez’s Barça Atletic.

It is clear that Xavi sees him as one with great potential and counts on him for the future.

Sources have informed Barça Universal that the youngster could even be called up for pre-season with the first team this summer.

While Bernal’s primary niche is the defensive midfield position, he is also capable of playing as an interior on need.

His ball-playing skills, physique and decision-making under pressure make him the ideal player for Barcelona’s style of play.

Future is safe

The teenager’s contract with Barcelona runs until the summer of 2026, and several clubs across Europe have shown interest in picking up the protege.

The La Masia starlet has attracted interest from the Premier League, Bundesliga and Serie A, but is firm that his future lies in Barcelona.

With Xavi keeping a close eye on his progress and the door to the first team not too far away, it is safe to say that Bernal is here to stay for the foreseeable future.

A contract renewal for an additional season with the option of two more seasons is under negotiations as well.
