Gavi’s season-ending injury has left Barcelona in a state of emergency, resulting in a shift of approach for the January transfer market. With a crucial player sidelined for the rest of the season, Xavi finds himself grappling with the task of securing a midfield reinforcement.

Amid various names linked to the team, Giovani Lo Celso remains Xavi’s preferred choice

Notably, Xavi had expressed interest in acquiring the midfielder during the summer, and despite an unsuccessful attempt by Barça, there is now a renewed determination to pursue the deal.

But there is a problem

The primary challenge in Lo Celso’s pursuit lies in Barcelona’s financial constraints, limiting them to exploring the possibility of a loan and nothing else.

As far as Tottenham are concerned, SPORT mentions that they will outrightly reject this offer even though they would not mind if he leaves. The only catch is, that they are awaiting a more favourable proposal.

The Premier League club, having paid a substantial sum of €55 million for his transfer, would only consider a transfer if presented with an enticing offer that allows them to recoup a significant portion of their initial investment.

This have changed for Lo Celso

After a rocky start, Lo Celso, who has a year and a half remaining on his contract, has now become a valuable asset for Tottenham.

His recent standout performances, including filling in for the injured James Maddison and contributing two goals in the last four Premier League games, underscore his importance to Tottenham.

Moreover, the absence of key players like Rodrigo Bentancur, who is recovering from an ankle injury, and the participation of Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr in the African Cup of Nations further complicates the likelihood of Lo Celso’s departure in January.

Right now, Tottenham seem keen on retaining Lo Celso, at least until the end of the season, unless an offer of substantial value materializes, enabling them to seek a replacement in the market.
