Ernesto Valverde

Ernesto Valverde is a former footballer and football manager who played for and managed Barcelona.

He did not enjoy a particularly successful playing career as a forward, scoring 76 goals in 319 matches across six Spanish teams in two divisions, but went onto become a manager four years after retirement. He managed Athletic Bilbao during two separate spells, and then Barcelona from 2017 to 2019.

The Spanish manager won two La Ligas and one Copa del Rey while at the Catalan capital, but is most famous for the gruelling defeats at the hands of AS Roma and Liverpool in the Champions League.

Eventually, Valverde was relieved of his duties as manager following the club’s defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup. He was then replaced by Quique Setien.
