Interacting with ESPN, Sergino Dest has recently offered thoughts on his future at Barcelona, while going into detail about his injury problems in the past, Barça’s prospects in the new season and the upcoming pre-season tour to the United States.
The highlight of the interview saw the American international pledge his future at Camp Nou, amid speculation linking him to a potential move away from the club.
“I’m happy at this club, and I will definitely stay here,” Dest confirmed, which was not a surprise for many as Barcelona had already trimmed their right-back unit by now renewing the contract of Dani Alves.
There have been multiple speculations over the potential arrival of Cesar Azpilicueta, but the deal with Chelsea has not come to fruition just yet.
Dest has come under fire for his injury problems with Barcelona in the past. But the athlete is hopeful it will not be an issue in the coming season and is doing everything he can to be available throughout the 2022/23 campaign.
“I had two injuries last year so I don’t want any injuries anymore. I’m taking it very seriously; I want to play all season and not be injured. I just want to have a good pre-season. I had to train a lot during the vacation because I was still injured,” he said.
When asked about Barcelona’s prospects for the season ahead, Dest suggested the team is good enough to restore the club’s lost glory and once again compete for titles.
“We are Barca. Everyone expects us to be the best. I believe we are going to have a great season. We are all extremely motivated, especially because there’s a World Cup coming up.
“We all still have to develop and have a long way to go at Barca. I feel like we have a lot of talent and I believe that if we all develop well, we can do similar to what other Barca teams before us achieved,” he added.
In their attempts to return to the echelon of European football, Barcelona have roped in several top-class players this month, including Raphinha, Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie, while extending the contract of Ousmane Dembele.
All of them are slated to travel with the team in the upcoming pre-season tour to the United States, with Dest likely to be involved in the thick of things. Barcelona will kickstart the tour with a friendly against Inter Miami, before facing teams such as Juventus and even their arch-rivals Real Madrid.
“It’s exciting but I don’t feel it as pressure. I haven’t experienced playing in the U.S. with Barcelona. I’m always very proud to play with my country. It’s going to be a nice experience for me to play there with Barca.
“We are going to play some good games in some nice cities. We are going to Las Vegas, Miami, New York and Dallas. I’ve been to all those cities except Dallas. Games against Real Madrid and Juventus will be good tests,” said Dest.
The American international added he is looking forward to playing against Real Madrid, in particular, in what could be the first El Clasico on US soil since July 2017.
“I’m really excited about the Clasico, it’s going to be very hard. We have a World Cup coming up and we all can’t wait for that.”
