The Lionel Messi – Cristiano Ronaldo debate is one for the ages, and does not have an objective answer, and maybe it never will. Both forwards have developed their game over the course of several years despite starting out as inverted wingers, and naturally people have preference for one of their playing style.
Former Barcelona player and now football pundit Gary Lineker has always advocated for Messi being his favourite footballer, and the greatest of all time. In fact, he does not shy away from praising the Argentine at every other opportunity and it seems that Cristiano Ronaldo does not appreciate that.
Ronaldo’s former teammate Rio Ferdinand has revealed, as relayed by Pundit Arena, that the Portuguese often texts him angrily regarding Linekar’s comments on Messi and preferring the six-time Ballon d’Or winner over him.
“It’s a great example to young players that he uses negativity as fuel. You [Lineker] said some things like your preference would be Messi out of the two,” Ferdinand said explaining Ronaldo’s motivation drive. “He will send me a text saying, ‘I can’t believe he (Linekar) said that, I can’t believe he’s done that’. He just uses anything.”
Linekar’s most recent comments on the Messi – Ronaldo debate came prior to the start of the Euros, where speaking to GOAL, the Englishman talked about Kylian Mbappe.
“Mbappe is already a global superstar who is most likely to jump in the shoes of Ronaldo, but not Messi – he can do things that others simply can’t,” Linekar said comparing the three.
Well, all said and done, this certainly puts an end to the rumours claiming that Joan Laporta will bring Cristiano Ronaldo to Camp Nou in an attempt to pair up the two greats.
