According to Cadena SER program El Larguero, Lionel Messi’s contract renewal saga with Barcelona could be far more long-drawn than expected. With plenty of factors in play that will influence the Argentine’s decision to continue, there may be a while before fans get any clarity on the situation.

With multiple reports stating that Messi has already received the first offer from Barcelona and is even supposedly unhappy with it, realistically, that may not be the case. Since Barcelona are still under audit, it is tough to make an official offer without assessing the club’s finances.

On the program, the possibility of Messi leaving for the Copa America before making a concrete decision on his renewal was discussed. A prospect that seems more and more likely since Barcelona are still ways away from gaining the necessary financial information they need, to evaluate their potential transfer business.

Since Lionel Messi is keen on knowing about the sports project just as much (if not more) as the economics of the deal Barcelona can offer, he may travel with the Argentine national team without closing any deal.

The 33-year old wants to know everything from the coach to the potential arrivals and departures for next season. President Joan Laporta and his board are still waiting for more details from the audit so that they can present a specific figure on the table for Messi.

At Barcelona, they are reportedly not optimistic about this information coming through soon, which will slow down the entire process. However, there is optimism that even if reduced, the club can offer the Argentine a satisfactory amount. It seems as though the negotiations are underway, but the fans will have to wait patiently for more developments.
