According to recent reports by ESPN, Manchester City are planning a new approach to acquire Lionel Messi’s signature in the summer. The Barcelona star’s contract is set to expire on the 30th of June and he has been free to negotiate a deal with any club of his choosing since the 1st of January. Manchester City have been constantly in the conversation to sign the superstar since he announced his intention to leave at the end of last season.

The report highlights that the English side will now take a more conservative approach in their pursuit of the Argentine. They have not ruled out signing Messi for free this summer, but they will wait till March or April to properly gauge the situation. They believe biding their time will be key to securing his services, as opposed to the recent approach Paris Saint Germain have opted for. City were clear frontrunners to sign Messi after last season but have been away from the spotlight recently.

PSG have been heavily linked to Lionel Messi in recent weeks, with their strategy to lure the 33-year-old being a lot less subtle. Many of the French side’s players and staff including Leo’s former teammate and close friend Neymar and compatriot Angel Di Maria have openly expressed their desire for Messi to join them. Sources have reportedly told ESPN though, that this approach may not be ideal. Apparently Messi likes neither all the noise being made in the media, nor PSG’s comments about him.

The Barça captain however, has publicly stated that he will not make a decision about his future until the end of the 2020-21 season. The club’s presidential elections scheduled in March, will undoubtedly play a huge role in his decision. The new president will have a major task ahead of him if he is to convince Messi to stay at Barcelona.
