Ousmane Dembélé has been somewhat of a mystery for Barcelona faithful and the club themselves ever since he arrived at the Camp Nou. Despite being a young winger clearly full of talent and potential, the Frenchman never truly settled within the squad.

Of course, injuries played an enormous part in that, as we all know, but there were issues aplenty even outside the pure fitness problems. Still, it has to be said that things have been looking up for the former Borussia Dortmund player as of late.

According to Transfermarkt, with him being back to full fitness, Dembélé has once again regained an important role in the team, playing 565 minutes across seven games in all competitons since his return from injury. In that time, he was also able to score twice and assist once, helping Barcelona secure a point against Eibar and a big win in the Copa del Rey against UE Cornellà.

But as SPORT remind with one of their latest reports, Dembélé’s contract is set to expire next year and the Frenchman has some big admirers from abroad. If the outlet is to be believed, giants of European football like Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Chelsea are all waiting in line for his signature.

This puts Barcelona in a rather difficult situation. On one hand, they obviously want to keep the Frenchman at the club but that would mean that he absolutely has to sign a new deal with them.

If he doesn’t, there’s a risk they lose him for free in 2022, which would mean a catastrophic loss in both the financial and sporting sense. And it also makes this summer the last chance for them to actually make a decent profit on the young winger.

Not that they would like to do that, however. His contribution in the last couple of games has proved that there is a place for a player of his profile in this Barcelona team.

Dembélé is quick, unpredictable, dazzling and creative, all of which are aspects the Azulgranas miss, especially when a certain Lionel Messi is unavailable.

Apart from that, we have to remember that the club is getting a new president soon and whoever he ends up being, he’ll have a big say in the matter. Joan Laporta, one of the favourites to win the race, for example, would be heavily against the sale of the Frenchman.

We know for certain because he recently commented on the situation, praising Dembouz for the unique qualities he brings to the table.

“I’m glad Dembélé recovered well. He is the only player who can keep the opposition pressured for the whole game apart from Messi.”

With one of the favourites having such a clear stance on Dembélé and Ronald Koeman clearly having a role for him in the team, it’s unlikely Barcelona will want to sell him.

However, we once again come back to the contract situation. If he is to stay, the Frenchman will have to pen a new deal, there are no two ways about it. If, however, he shows any signs of doubt, that would put the Catalans in an awkward spot, to say the least.

But at the same time, with his misfortune finally taking a turn for the better, and Koeman giving him ample chances in the team, it wouldn’t be a reach to believe he may want to continue in the Catalan capital.

Alternatively, however, the two parties would have to part ways this summer already. And that, needless to say, would be a big hit for Barcelona.
