With just 1.5 years left on his Barcelona contract right now, Ousmane Dembele’s position at the club is certainly a fascinating one. While the club wants to renew his contract, the winger is in no hurry to do so, as reported by Alfredo Martinez.

The questions that have surrounded Dembele have always been of availability, and never ability. Suffering multiple injuries during his time at Barça, the World Cup winner has missed 85 games through injuries, with his hamstring being the source of massive problems for both him and the club. That is just under 50% of the total official games Barcelona have played during this period.

Call it unlucky, or carelessness, Dembele had become a liability for the club during large periods of last season, where he played no more than 5 games in the league. Even though he is back and firing now, it puts Barcelona in a complicated predicament about his contract, which is set to expire in June, 2022.

There are several European giants ready to latch-up Dembele in the summer, with Juventus, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich all reportedly wanting his services. In fact, the Frenchman was very close to leaving Barcelona prior to the stat of the 2020/21 campaign, with Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer and co. offering him the Blaugranas a loan + optional move deal.

A move failed to materialise, and thankfully so. Ronald Koeman’s hand was forced, eventually playing him. Fast forward four months later, and Dembele has become an integral part of the starting XI.

He is certainly in no hurry to sign the extension, but Barcelona’s financial situation means they will have to inevitably delay the extension anyway. Until the new president arrives and magically pulls the club out of the €1 billion-plus debt that has been reported, nobody except Messi will be signing any contracts anytime soon.
