Report: Barcelona interim board holds meeting to investigate Messi contract leaks
According to latest reports by COPE, the Barcelona interim board has met at the Camp Nou offices in order to conduct an investigation into the leaks of Lionel Messi’s contract. Spanish newspaper El Mundo published the internet-breaking news last week, revealing the figures behind the Argentine superstar’s latest deal with Barcelona.
The report highlights that the meeting is already underway in order to approve the internal investigation into the matter. Compliance officer Miereia Simona has taken over proceedings with the strict guidelines of keeping all dealings highly confidential. Over the course of the past week, plenty of Messi’s teammates and other players have come out in support of the Barcelona superstar, as has coach Ronald Koeman, who has labelled the leaks as ‘malicious’.
El Mundo, a Madrid-based outlet, published a huge story outlining the details of the mega-deal that Messi signed with Barcelona back in 2017. The outlet called Messi’s contract as ‘pharaonic’ and claimed that it was the major reason for Barcelona’s current financial crisis that sees them in a debt of 1.173 billion euros. The deal, which is set to expire on the 30th of June, will reportedly net the Barça superstar upwards of 555 million euros.
Barcelona themselves, released a statement saying they had nothing to do with the leaks and are in full support of the club captain. Koeman and also presidential candidates Victor Font and Joan Laporta have voiced their solidarity for Messi. They have vocally said that Leo earns the club much more than what is paid to him and that the memories he provides on top of that are priceless. They have vowed to identify whoever is behind the leaks and stated that the party in question cannot continue at Barcelona.
RAC1 had previously reported that only five people had access to the document with four of them being known. The named parties included president at the time Josep Maria Bartomeu, Oscar Grau, Jordi Mestre and of course Messi. Hence, the possibility of the leak being internal is extremely high.
