Heading into the summer transfer window, there has been a lot of talk about FC Barcelona needing to make some important sales owing to their financial situation.

As such, the name of Frenkie de Jong has been linked heavily with a departure, owing to his salary and the fact that he is wanted by a number of clubs and could fetch a significant fee.

Ligue 1 champions PSG were touted to be one of his suitors heading into the summer, along with other clubs like Bayern Munich and Manchester United.

PSG no longer keen

But, a new report from SPORT claims that PSG have decided to call off their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong in the upcoming summer transfer window.

A few months ago, De Jong’s agent was formally informed that PSG were considering a major overhaul of their midfield.

Luis Enrique’s side were planning to facilitate several departures to free up salary margin with which to raid the market. And De Jong was one of the targets for the Spanish coach and Luis Campos, PSG’s sporting advisor.

However, the scenario has changed substantially. PSG will focus most of their financial resources on finding a replacement for a departing Kylian Mbappé, shoring up the flanks and improving the defence.

The coaches believe that the growth experienced by Vitinha in the final stretch of the season deserves a vote of confidence and it is not essential to bring in another player with a similar profile.

Thus, PSG will not be knocking on Barça’s door to present a transfer offer for De Jong. The Parisian lure is no longer on the table for the future of a player who has kept quiet and is now only focused on his full recovery and the European Championship.

Flick sees De Jong as untouchable

De Jong’s future has been a subject of speculation for months now, owing to the fact that he is yet to respond to Barcelona’s contract renewal proposal.

However, as per recent reports, new manager Hansi Flick and the club see him as an ‘untouchable’ and intend to retain his services beyond the summer.

De Jong, for his part, feels comfortable in his current situation, and as such, has shown no urgency in progressing the renewal talks.
