Ousmane Dembele may not have played a big part in the second half of Barcelona’s 2022-23 season. However, his contribution in the first half of the campaign cannot be understated.

In 23 games for the Catalans this season, the winger has scored five goals and provided five assists. Needless to say, he is indispensable under Xavi Hernandez.

Reports earlier this week linked Frenchman to a move to PSG, although it was soon clarified that the player had no intention of making such a move.

In a recent interview with Telefoot, the forward spoke about his future and other topics including Lionel Messi and the Champions League. Here are the snippets from his interview.

The winger first talked about his love for the club, and revealed that his connection with Barcelona dates far before his move to Catalonia, saying,

“I have supported FC Barcelona since I was very young, I have always been a supporter of this great club.”

There has been no shortage of rumours connecting the Frenchman with an exit from the club over the past few years. When asked about his feelings at Barcelona, however, he had only words of faith.

“I feel good here in Barcelona. I hope to become a very, very great player here.”

After a tumultuous few years at the club, Dembele ended his injury-riddled spell earlier this season. Speaking about his contribution and role under Xavi Hernandez, he admitted that injuries had been a big hurdle in his development.

“Statistically, I could have done a lot better. I am still unsatisfied, with this injury which has kept me away from the field this season. My development at Barça has been a little slowed down by injuries.”

Dembele also addressed the topic of racism that has been in the limelight in Spain over the past few weeks, standing in solidarity with Vinicius Jr.

“I’ve urged authorities to address racism and stand in solidarity with Vinicius. I have already been a victim of racism. Several of us on the ground wondered if we had really heard those cries. It’s been going on for several years, we have to react.”

Lionel Messi’s return is the burning topic in Catalonia ahead of the June transfer window. When asked about the possibility of the Argentine returning to the club, he said,

“Messi is the absolute legend here. To see him again by our side would be exceptional.”

While Dembele has almost won it all at Barcelona, the UEFA Champions League remains on his bucket list. He wound up his interview with a comment on the European competition.

“My biggest dream is to win a Champions League with Barça. Winning this trophy with the club you love is the holy grail.”
