What felt inevitable has finally happened as Barcelona officially release a statement confirming the founding of the European Super League and their participation in it as one of the founders. Josep Bartomeu had dropped this bomb as early as October when resigning as President and it seems that Joan Laporta has signed off on it as well, despite openly calling it out during his campaign.

The statement confirms that the competition is due to start this August, and that its creation comes during a time of a global pandemic where football has hit economic crisis.
The format will have 20 participating clubs, in a league plus knockout format, with 15 founding clubs and further five teams qualifying based on achievements in the prior season. Midweek fixtures will be observed. The clubs will be divided into groups of ten with the top three one each group automatically qualifying for the quarter finals. Teams finishing fourth and fifth will then compete in a two-legged play-off for the last two two quarter final positions.
