Barcelona’s pursuit of a new right-back this season is an open secret. With the January transfer window just around the corner, the club are increasingly desperate to shore up their options in the positions.

Diogo Dalot has been one of Barça’s top targets throughout the season, especially following the Portuguese international’s impressive performances for Manchester United this term.

Formerly of FC Porto, Dalot has indeed emerged as one of Man United’s top performers, having established himself as a reliable option in the right-back slot. Barcelona have been closely monitoring his development for months now and had targeted the defender ahead of the January transfer window.

However, Barcelona have been dealt with a fresh blow in their pursuit of Dalot as Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that the club have activated the clause in the defender’s contract.

The clause extends Dalot’s contract, which was set to expire at the end of the season, to 2024. This means Barcelona will not be in a position to sign the Portuguese international on a cut-price deal next month or to send him a proposal for a pre-contract agreement.

“I can confirm we have triggered options to extend the contracts of Rashford, Dalot, Shaw & Fred until 2024. We want to construct a team for the future, so for longer years, and those players have to be part of it,” Man United manager ten Hag confirmed (h/t Fabrizio Romano).

However, it is fair to point out that activating the contract extension clause does not guarantee Dalot’s long-term future at Old Trafford. The defender has remained tight-lipped on his future so far, and although a January exit might not be a possibility, Barça can certainly make an attempt to sign him in the summer.
