Ilkay Gundogan has been long linked with a move to FC Barcelona this summer, with the German international in line to join the Catalans on a free transfer.

The midfielder’s current contract at Etihad expires at the end of the season. Although the player has not ruled out the option of renewing his deal, multiple parties, including Man City expect him to leave the club in the summer.

According to reports in Argentine media, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo, Manchester City have already started looking for a replacement for Gundogan, with Alexis Mac Allister emerging as one of the top targets.

Currently plying his trade for Brighton & Hove Albion, Mac Allister has been the beating heart of his team’s creative unit in recent seasons. His performances with the Argentine national team have also been impressive, with the midfielder notably playing a starring role at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Manchester City looking out for Mac Allister in their bid to replace Gundogan this summer serves as a major boost for Barcelona.

Although the Blaugrana are in a precarious situation in regard to their economic situation, Gundogan could prove to be an excellent cost-effective option for the club.

The player himself is ready to join the Catalans and would reportedly be willing to settle for a lower salary. Gundogan has the technical prowess and the experience to become an ideal asset for Xavi Hernandez in the middle of the park. This is coupled with his status as a free agent thus making him the perfect option for Barça.

Reports suggest that Barcelona are on their way to signing Gundogan as well as Inigo Martinez on free transfers. And with Manchester City looking at replacements already, chances are likely that the German could end up at Spotify Camp Nou.
