With Lionel Messi’s contract situation at Barcelona still far from being resolved, Getafe president Angel Torres has had his say on the matter while speaking to Onda Cero.

Messi, who has spent his entire career with Barcelona, saw his contract run out at the end of the last month. The 34-year-old is nearing a month as a free agent now, with a resolution over a new deal still not in sight.

While it has been reported that the terms of the new contract have been agreed between the Argentina superstar and Barca, the Catalan giants are unable to register him as their player until they trim their wages off considerably so as to fit Messi’s new deal while staying within the limits of La Liga’s salary cap.

That is where things are proving tricky for the Blaugrana as they are finding it hard to move players with big wages like Miralem Pjanic, Samuel Umtiti and Antoine Griezmann among others. With the new season just over two weeks away, the circumstances are not quite ideal for Barcelona at the moment.

And, Getafe’s president, Angel Torres, has given his two cents on the entire situation, stating that it is in the best interests of La Liga that a superstar like Messi stays in the competition.

“I have discussed it with Laporta and also with Tebas. La Liga cannot allow Messi to leave. We would all regret it. Players like Messi or Cristiano should continue here,” Torres said.

It has previously been reported that presidents from a few elite La Liga clubs were ready to offer their help in a bid to ensure that Messi re-signs with Barcelona and stays in the Spanish top flight. Quite how they would go about that remains unclear.

Nonetheless, seems like it is not just Barcelona and their fans that want Messi to remain at the club.
