Lionel Messi only Barcelona player to feature in La Liga team of the week

For the first time since the comeback win over Granada in the Copa Del Rey, Barcelona stepped forward as a team to take down Sevilla in the La Liga on the weekend, registering a 0-2 win at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. While each player was equally responsible for the win, Lionel Messi’s goal and assist certainly helped him standout from the group as the Man of the Match.

His performance was acknowledged by football statistics outlets Sofascore and Whoscored, both of whom have included him in their La Liga team of the week. He is the only Barcelona player to feature in both of those teams, even though Ousmane Dembele, Oscar Mingueza, and Sergio Busquets put on an absolute show, as well.

Sofascore awarded Messi with a rating of 8.6, which made him the Player of the Week in La Liga. He features as a forward in the 4-4-2 setup alongside Real Madrid’s Lucas Vazquez and Real Madrid. Atletico Madrid also boast of two players in the team, with Jan Oblak keeping guard in goal, and Saul Niguez at left midfield.

Unsurprisingly, Leo is also the highest-rated player in the Whoscored setup as well, with a near-perfect rating of 9.5. Vazquez, Oblak, Saul and Jeison Murillo are the only other players to get their name etched in both teams.

Lionel Messi is the only Barcelona player that features in both Sofascore's and Whoscored's La Liga team of the week for gameweek 25.

This is the third consecutive time Messi has been featured in the team of the week by Sofascored. He missed out on it in gameweek 22, when a rating of 7.8 was not enough as he came off the bench to score vs Real Betis.

The onus is on him to continue his incredible run of form as Barcelona will visit Osasuna in the next round of fixtures in the La Liga. Before that, though — hosting Sevilla at the Camp Nou with the pressure of overturning a 2-0 deficit.
