Girona’s fairytale lead at the top of La Liga may have fizzled out, but one cannot deny that the Catalan side have enjoyed a very successful run in the league.

30 games into the season, they are firmly placed third on the table with a seven-point lead over fourth-placed Atletico Madrid. At this point, a spot in next season’s Champions League appears written in stone.

Girona’s success has been down to a collective performance from across all departments. One player who has remained consistently one of the team’s best performers is Barcelona-linked Aleix Garcia.

The dream signing

Come June, Barcelona are looking to incorporate a new name in midfield and Garcia is one of the top names on their wish list.

His release clause is believed to stand at €20 million, though Joan Laporta and Co. hope to complete his signing for less.

Speaking in an interview (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Girona sporting director Quique Carcel was asked about the rumours of Garcia’s move to Barcelona, to which he said,

“Many situations and rumours have come out, something that has made us divert attention because it is not normal that Girona players have been on the front page of major newspapers.”

“It is difficult for a Girona player to end up playing for Barça or Real Madrid because they are clubs that have a very wide market,” he added, stating that clubs like Barcelona would look for better-known profiles.

He then proceeded to admit that Garcia’s move to Barcelona was not entirely impossible, especially considering how the Catalans took in Oriol Romeu from Girona last season.

“Even so, there is a precedent that makes him contemplate all the situations. It is true that what happened last year with Oriol Romeu shows that we can’t say it’s impossible.”

“They are players who are doing very well but I am prudent with the issue of the clauses because they are situations that are not occurring,” he added.

Barcelona are confident about signing Garcia for a fee of around €14-15 million in the summer, with there being the possibility of adding a player like Oriol Romeu or Eric Garcia as part of the deal.
