Just in: Messi not close to renewing contract with PSG – Gerard Romero

Dropping a huge bombshell, journalist Gerard Romero has reported that Lionel Messi is closer to not renewing his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.
The 35-year-old former Barcelona captain is out of contract at the end of the ongoing season. It had given way to speculations that the Argentina skipper could potentially return to Catalonia as a free agent.
Joan Laporta had previously talked up the possibility although he has mellowed down on the matter in recent times, especially with the club’s Financial Fair Play situation being as it is.
Furthermore, it was widely reported that Messi and PSG already had reached an agreement in principle to continue their partnership for at least one more season.
But, Romero has now dropped a huge bombshell, stating that, as this stand, Messi is closer to not renewing his contract with the Ligue 1 champions.
The journalist, however, clarifies that this does not mean that the seven-time Ballon d’Or will be returning to Barcelona in the summer.
However, it does leave the door slightly ajar for a potential comeback to his old stomping ground for the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner.
Messi left Barça in the summer of 2021 after the club failed to renew his expired contract due to their sorry financial situation.
Laporta has stood by his decision not to go through with the Argentine international’s extension as he insists that he had the best interests of the club when taking the call.
Talks of a return have been doing the rounds for quite some time now, but things had gone quiet due to the reports of an impending renewal with PSG.
But Romero is now claiming that Messi does not wish to continue at Parc des Princes as of today, although it does not mean that he will not change his mind in the future or return to Barcelona.
After winning the World Cup, the 35-year-old wants to evaluate his future and is no longer married to the idea of continuing in Paris.
Thus, the door has been left open for the Catalans to try and persuade the club legend to make a comeback for one last dance after having parted ways with him in difficult circumstances in 2021.
