Jurgen Klopp willing to consider Barcelona outcast as Germany’s No. 1 – report

The last few years have been tough for Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who has gone from being No. 1 goalkeeper at Barcelona to being shipped out on multiple loan deals.

The World Cup situation made it worse as the German not only missed the squad due to injury but also saw him getting demoted as Manuel Neuer returned to the fray.

However, Ter Stegen’s luck hasn’t yet fully run out and the recent appointment of Jurgen Klopp as the head coach of Germany could usher in a ray of hope for the goalkeeper.

Klopp to consider Ter Stegen his number one

According to Sport BILD (h/t SPORT), Jurgen Klopp is ready to consider Ter Stegen as the Germany number one, now than Neuer is out of the picture after a horrendous World Cup.

The report adds that Klopp has personally contacted the German to inform his desire to have him defend the goal for Die Mannschaft.

It would mark quite the turnaround for a goalkeeper, who has barely played any football over the past 12 months due to injury and wasn’t even a part of Barcelona’s team plans.

Not to mention, ter Stegen had significant competition with Jonas Urbig and Oliver Baumann also vying for the number one role in between the sticks.

But Klopp has chosen ter Stegen, at least for now. The Barcelona custodian, after all, brings a wealth of experience, having already featured in 44 matches for the German national team.

What does it mean for Barcelona?

The idea of seeing Ter Stegen return to goal of the German national team should excite Barcelona as it could provide its own benefits.

Performing on the international stage would give Ter Stegen more visibility, thus boosting the goalkeeper’s valuation.

It must be remembered that Ter Stegen still has a contract at Barcelona until 2028. So between now and then, the Catalans would hope to have the goalkeeper perform as best as he can.

The German, though, has had a mixed start to life at Ajax, having conceded 11 goals in just seven matches, with two clean sheets. Both Barcelona and Ajax will be hoping for improved performances as the season progresses.
