Since the beginning of the 2020/21 season, Ansu Fati has been all over the headlines in Barcelona. The La Masia born and bred youngster is taking the stage by storm and turning into a star at 17 years of age.
Of course, it does help when you directly contribute to a goal or assist every 49 minutes for the team this campaign. That makes Ronald Koeman’s job of picking his starters up front that much easier. However, with his career on a huge up right now, Barcelona have to be wary of potential suitors.
After all, it wouldn’t exactly be the first time they lost an exciting young prospect due to their own carelessness. According to SPORT, Jorge Mendes is already negotiating a renewal for his client. The aim is for Fati to continue at the club for many more years.
But, it won’t be easy, that much is for certain. Yes, the youngster’s heart is set on Barcelona but he has offers from half the Europe, and lucrative ones at that. Getting more money abroad would be easy for Fati. At the moment, however, if Barcelona play their cards right, there’s nothing to fear.
The youngster’s contract expires in 2022 with an option for another two but his Portuguese agent would rather pen a new deal altogether. Of course, Barça are aware that Mendes will ask for a significant rise in salary but they have to ensure it’s still manageable.
Because, let’s not forget, the club is still in the red. Handing out multi-million deals left and right is something they simply can’t afford anymore.
But Fati might just be an exception. After all, if someone deserves it, it’s him. As we know, however, negotiating with Mendes can be a rather difficult ordeal.
Let’s hope they reach an agreement that suits both parties.
