Earlier this months, reports emerged claiming that Barcelona had sanctioned the design of a white kit as their away jersey for the 2023/24 campaign.
The Blaugrana have not used a white-coloured jersey for over 40 years so as to avoid clashing with their arch-rivals, Real Madrid. However, Joan Laporta and his board are ready to approve a white kit for the next season.
The development has certainly generated a lot of intrigue over the possible designs that Nike might come up with for the next season. However, not everyone is pleased with the idea of switching to white jerseys for the 2023/24 campaign.
One such person who is not sold on the white colour scheme for Barcelona’s away jerseys is former presidential candidate Lluís Bassat.
The 80-year-old, who stood for the Barcelona presidential elections in 2003 and lost to Joan Laporta, believes that using white colour for the away kits next term would be a huge mistake.
Writing in his column for La Vanguardia (h/t Mundo Deportivo), he stated: “Brands are not just a name and a symbol or a shield They are much more. They are colours, font and, above all, values.”
“FC Barcelona has done very well, in recent years, updating its font, which we professionals call the logo and its shield. But it is about to make a huge mistake in the use of colours.”
“I don’t like to see my team in sky blue, yellow or pink, but I can put up with it if it’s to improve our battered economy. But in white, as they announce it will be the second kit for next season, no. Absolutely No.
“There is already another club in Spain known as the white club or the white players and I don’t want them to confuse us”, Bassat added.
More details have emerged on the kit, with the Barcelona crest on the away jersey for next season set to be a retro design from the 1970s. It will certainly be interesting to see how the fans react to the white jerseys that the Catalans seem set to don next season.
