Barcelona’s midfield has perhaps attracted the most attention this season, for mostly the right reasons. A number of players have become unexpected protagonists, while others have struggled to play at their best level.

As per a report relayed by El Nacional, Riqui Puig has been touted with a move away from Barcelona. The interested parties are Getafe and their manager, Quique Sanchez Flores.

Since the 2018/19 season, Riqui has accumulated 37 matches. Despite this, he has not been among the most important players at the club. In those matches, he has played little over 1,200 minutes in La Liga, averaging around 33 minutes per game.

Flores is looking to reinforce his team and wants the creative output of Puig. Granted, the midfielder has an all-time one goal and two assists to his name in La Liga, he is a highly creative player. His risk-taking ability, as demonstrated brilliantly under Quique Setien, is something that Getafe feel they need.

Puig chooses Barcelona bench over Getafe’s game-time

Furthermore, Los Azulones know that they can offer the Barça #6 something he almost cannot deny – playing time. Puig has only played when others were unavailable under Xavi Hernandez and Ronald Koeman, mostly sitting out as the sixth-choice midfielder.

At Getafe, he will almost definitely be a prominent player. Proof of the same comes from Carles Alena’s tenure with the La Liga outfit. The Spaniard has started 19 out of 20 possible matches so far, assisting twice.

Sitting 17th in the league, Getafe have struggled to find the back of the net this season, scoring a league-low 13 goals. Riqui could be their way out of this troubling scenario with his line-breaking passes.

Despite this, Puig is unsatisfied with La Geta’s proposals. The 22-year-old’s only objective is to succeed with Barcelona, something he has been adamant about doing for his entire career.

Time at Barcelona will be hard to come by for Puig. In recent weeks when granted the opportunity to play, he has repeatedly underperformed, leading to him being benched for his side. The returns to fitness of Pedri Gonzalez and Frenkie de Jong will make this task all the more difficult.

With just one and a half years left in his contract, Riqui Puig will have a big decision to make.
