Fabrizio Romano: Barcelona turned down chance to sign Tottenham midfielder as part of Emerson deal

Barcelona’s transfer window this past summer was a memorable one, and not always for the right reasons.

Apart from Lionel Messi’s departure, the Catalans also made some strange dealings that also saw Emerson Royal leave the club for Tottenham only a couple of weeks after his official unveiling as a Barcelona player.

Barca brought his full rights from Sevilla for a fee of €9 million, but the Brazilian was allowed to leave after just three appearances. The Catalan giants are set to pocket a fixed fee of €25 million from the sale – a solid profit, while they also got his wages off the bill, which was important from the club’s perspective.

Having moved to Tottenham on the transfer deadline day, the 23-year-old makes his debut against Crystal Palace in the Premier League today. And on the occasion of his first game for the Lilywhites, journalist Fabrizio Romano has made an interesting revelation.

The transfer expert has claimed that Barcelona had been offered two Tottenham players as part of the deal for Emerson – Tanguy Ndombele and Serge Aurier. But the club decided to reject both the players.

Ndombele has been linked with a move to Barcelona in the past as well and continues to find himself out of favour at Tottenham.

The Frenchman signed for the north London outfit in 2019 from Olympique Lyon but has struggled to kick on, be it under Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho or now Nuno Espirito Santo, who is yet to use him even in a single game. Barcelona were in the market for a new midfielder but decided that Ndombele was not the right fit.

As for Aurier, the Ivory Coast international could have been a direct like-for-like replacement for Emerson. However, Barcelona passed up on the chance to sign the right-back, who then went on to terminate his contract with Tottenham and is currently a free agent.
