It is no secret that Barcelona are in the market for a new left-back in the summer transfer window.

Jordi Alba is the only senior option at manager Xavi Hernandez’s disposal this term, with the 42-year-old not utilising youngster Alejandro Balde. As a result, Alba has had to play relentlessly week in and week out without a lot of rest or rotation.

So, it becomes important that Barça sign a new player in the position to cover for the veteran Spaniard and eventually take over from him as the first-choice left-back.

A move for Jose Gaya had been discussed in the past, but a move is unlikely to materialise as he could sign a new deal at Valencia.

Another option that the club are considering is former La Masia trainee Alejandro Grimaldo. The 26-year-old spent several years at the Barcelona academy but moved on to Benfica in 2016 in search of regular game-time.

And the move has worked a treat for the Spaniard as he has been a consistent performer for the Portuguese giants, racking up close to 250 appearances.

Now, though, Grimaldo is entering the final year of his contract with Benfica, with the deal expiring in 2023. And Barça are considering the possibility of bringing him back to the club in the summer transfer window.

Mundo Deportivo is now reporting that Benfica could demand a sum of €20 million for the services of Grimaldo, which might discourage the Catalan giants from making a move.

However, it must be remembered that Barça inserted a 15% sell-on fee while selling Grimaldo to Benfica, which would mean that the fee can reduce by that much.

But the report adds that the Blaugrana are seeing Celta Vigo’s Javi Galan as a more feasible target for the summer. It is claimed that the 27-year-old would cost lesser than €15 million, despite his contract with the Galician outfit running until the summer of 2026.

Galan’s versatility would also appeal to Xavi, while there is the possibility of Barcelona including a player in the deal, with Riqui Puig a potential choice as he is admired by Celta Vigo.

So, while Grimaldo remains on the agenda, the Catalans may likely concentrate on signing Galan.
