Diego Milito shares amazing anecdote about Messi at Barcelona: “Don’t worry, I’ll score three”

When it comes to Barcelona defenders, Gabriel Milito might not qualify for the top of the list. But the defender, commonly known as Gabi, was a key player for Barça during Pep Guardiola’s time.

Gabi had a role to play in helping Barcelona seal the famous treble in 2011, though he was barely a second fiddle to the primary centre-backs.

Nevertheless, in a recent podcast, Gabi’s brother, Diego Milito, has shared an interesting anecdote about Lionel Messi and the time when his brother and the Argentine used to share the pitch for Barcelona.

Messi’s message to Gabi in 2010 UCL game

When Barcelona were playing Arsenal in the quarterfinals of the 2009/10 Champions League, the Catalans were coming on the back of a 2-2 draw in the first leg.

Things got tense when Arsenal scored the first goal at Camp Nou, with Gabi making an individual error.

Instead of going all out on the centre-back, Diego Milito revealed that the Argentine had said (h/t MARCA), “Don’t worry, Gabi, I’ll score three tonight.”

Messi even ended up scoring a hat-trick and put the result back in Barcelona’s favour.

After the Argentine completed his hat-trick, Gabi told him, “Go on Leo, make the fourth and finish it.” Messi responded: “Do you want another one? Good.”

Sure enough, the attacker ended the night with another goal, which marked one of his finest performances in the Champions League.

Messi’s astounding performance on the night helped Barcelona seal a 6-3 aggregate win over the Gunners and advance through to the semifinals.

The Catalans, though, failed to beat Inter Milan to qualify for the finals. They lost 3-2 on aggregate to the Italian giants.

Curiously, Gabi’s brother Diego Milito was part of that Inter Milan squad and was even involved in three goals across the two semifinal legs.

Milito ended the competition with six goals and two assists, helping Inter secure the Champions League title in the process.
