It’s been decided long ago already – Barcelona need a new striker and Memphis Depay is the one Ronald Koeman likes the most. The two know each other from the Dutch national team so the new coach is aware of what the player can and cannot do.

However, according to the latest reports from RAC1, someone will first have to leave the club if they are to make any new signings this winter at all. So far, we’ve heard whispers of a chopping list that included players like Junior Firpo, Carles Aleñá, Martin Braithwaite and of course, Samuel Umtiti.

Whether Barça will actually be able to shift all (or any) of those names remains to be seen. All we do know at this point is that someone has to go. Depay is their priority signing but the funds are not available just yet.

Of course, the forward could come for a symbolic sum in January since his contract is set to run out the following summer. However, with the club near bankruptcy, even that could be a potential issue for the Catalans. There’s also an option to get him for free a couple of months later but it seems they don’t want to wait any longer.

It will be interesting to see who’s sacrificed so that the Dutchman can arrive.
